Fayyad: Nearly $400 Million Losses in Electricity & Water Sector, Efforts Underway to Accelerate Bill Collection Where Possible.

Beirut: Caretaker Minister of Energy and Water, Walid Fayyad, announced today that the electricity and water sector has suffered losses amounting to approximately $400 million. These losses are attributed to the additional costs of rapid relief, infrastructure improvement services in displacement areas, and financial losses due to insufficient bill collection. According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Fayyad emphasized the necessity of reforms, stating that a ceasefire followed by investments is required. He noted the high cost associated with some of these reforms. Fayyad explained that the electricity sector generates about $40 million per month under normal conditions, but this revenue has been halved due to the ongoing conflict. Fayyad highlighted that the variance in electricity supply between regions is a result of technical issues rather than production limitations. He revealed that there are outstanding bills spanning approximately thirteen months, and his ministry is working with "Electricité du Liban" to expedite collection where feasible. He further mentioned that UNICEF has taken the responsibility of providing water to shelter centers. Additionally, he pointed out that Iraq's fuel support represents a strategic long-term operation, with Egypt and Algeria also showing willingness to assist. Iraq has renewed its agreement with Lebanon for a fourth year, ensuring energy stability. However, Fayyad indicated that Electricité du Liban requires a financial transfer to boost electricity production.
