FM receives phone call from US counterpart

Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry received a phone call on Tuesday2/5/2023 from US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, during which they discussed the latest developments in Sudan.

At the beginning of the phone conversation, the US top diplomat extended deepest condolences to the Egyptian government and nation over the death of the assistant administrative attaché at the Egyptian Embassy in Khartoum, Mohamed el Gharawi, said Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid.

Blinken further lauded the sacrifices made by the members of the diplomatic corps working in Sudan, in light of the devastating security conditions.

He also extended thanks to Egypt for receiving thousands of Sudanese citizens through the land crossings.

The US stands fully ready to provide all the necessary assistance in order to assume this mission, he affirmed.

The two sides tackled ongoing efforts in order to reach a sustainable cease-fire in Sudan, which allows for the delivery of the humanitarian assistance to those who need it in the conflict-hit country, said the spokesman.

Shoukry was also keen to tackle Egypt's ongoing efforts through its direct contacts with the effective parties at the regional and international sides.

Any external interference in the ongoing conflict would complicate the situation on the ground, the minister stressed.

At the end of the phone conversation, the two sides agreed to continue coordination and cooperation within the upcoming phase.
