Foreign Ministry Files UN Complaint Against Israel Over Attack on Lebanese Army Personnel and Glyphosate Spraying in Southern Villages

Beirut: The Foreign Affairs and Emigrants Ministry announced that it submitted two separate letters to the UN Security Council and the UN Secretary-General on June 10 and June 11, 2026, addressing recent Israeli violations in southern Lebanon.

According to National News Agency - Lebanon, in its June 10 communication, the foreign ministry filed a complaint based on a report prepared by the National Council for Scientific Research, stating that on February 1, 2026, the Israeli military sprayed the herbicide glyphosate over several border villages in southern Lebanon. The ministry noted that the Chemical Weapons Convention prohibits the use of herbicides as a method of warfare. Laboratory analyses of soil samples collected from the villages of Aita al-Shaab, Ras Naqoura, and Dhayra have confirmed the presence of glyphosate at concentrations as high as 22,750 micrograms per gram. These levels far exceed the concentrations typically found in agricultural soils following direct herbicide application by farmers, which generally range between 0.5 and 2 micrograms per gram.

In a second letter dated June 11, the foreign ministry condemned the continued Israeli attacks on Lebanese territory, highlighting a June 6 strike on a Lebanese Army vehicle on the Kfartebnit-Khardali road. The attack resulted in the martyrdom of two military officers and a soldier while they were carrying out their duties in southern Lebanon.

The ministry called on the United Nations to condemn the attack and take immediate measures to halt repeated violations, while ensuring compliance with the UN Charter and relevant international resolutions, including UN Security Council Resolution 1701 (2006).

The statement further indicated that the attack undermines ongoing US-mediated negotiations between Lebanon and Israel in Washington aimed at building confidence, consolidating the cessation of hostilities, creating conditions for a lasting peaceful settlement, and securing Israel's withdrawal behind internationally recognized borders.

"At a time when negotiations are taking place between Lebanon and Israel in Washington, under American auspices, and measures are being put forward to build confidence, stabilize the cessation of hostilities, and create the necessary conditions to reach a peaceful and sustainable solution that guarantees security and stability in the region, and Israel's withdrawal beyond internationally recognized borders, Israel's targeting of Lebanese army personnel directly undermines the aforementioned diplomatic efforts, and threatens those aimed at strengthening the authority of the Lebanese state and extending Its sovereignty over its entire territory is exclusively by its own forces," the statement underscored.
