Beirut: France has requested an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council after Israeli forces seized the medieval Beaufort castle in Lebanon, the French foreign minister said Sunday.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot emphasized the urgency of the situation during an interview on the BFMTV channel. He stated, "I have requested an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council because, while we recognize Israel's right, like that of all countries, to self-defense... nothing can justify the continuation of Israeli military operations in Lebanon and its ever-deeper occupation of Lebanese territory."
The request underscores France's concern over the escalating tensions and the potential for further conflict in the region. The medieval Beaufort castle, located in southern Lebanon, has historically been a strategic site and its seizure by Israeli forces has raised alarms over territorial integrity and international stability. France is seeking a diplomatic intervention through the United Nations to address and potentially resolve the ongoing conflict.
