G20 Environment, Climate Ministers agree to work for sustainable resilient blue economy

The 4th Environment and Climate Sustainability Working Group and Environment and Climate Ministers meeting of the G20 which concluded on Friday in the Indian city of Chennai by adopting an outcome document namely the Chennai High Level Principles for a Sustainable and Resilient Ocean-based Economy.

Indian Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav said that the Outcome document and the Chair’s Summary were adopted consensually after significant discussions today in Chennai.

The ministerial meeting, attended by 41 ministers from G20 member countries and invited countries, highlighted significant achievements and key takeaways.

Land and biodiversity, blue economy, water resource management and circular economy were the priority areas under the environment and climate track.

Over 225 delegates representing member countries and invitee countries and heads and representatives of 23 International organisations including UNEP, UNFCC, COP28 and UNCCD took part in the deliberations.

They discussed challenges related to climate and environment which are of global importance.

Apart from one outcome document, India’s G20 Presidency released two Presidency documents under the theme of blue economy, four Presidency documents and compendiums of best practices under land and biodiversity, and water resources management.

Four Presidency documents were also released under resource efficiency and circular economy.

The participants stressed their key role in facing climate change and pledged to take action across all pillars of Paris Agreement.
