Amman: Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) Mayor Dr. Yousef Shawarbeh on Tuesday inaugurated its Urban Farming Training Centre in the capital's Muqablin area. Funded by the Japanese government, the center comes in cooperation between the GAM and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Jordan, as part of the activities of the Sustainable Urban Farming Project in Amman, and implemented by the UNDP and the municipality. According to Jordan News Agency, Shawarbeh emphasized that urban agriculture is a project that the GAM aims to expand to increase the resilience of the city and its residents, especially in the face of climate change. He highlighted the municipality's commitment to preserving Amman's natural heritage and agricultural areas. Shawarbeh also announced plans to work on a project to encourage gardening and increase fruit trees, in collaboration with the UNDP and the local community. The Japanese Ambassador to Jordan, Okuyama Jiro, expressed satisfaction with the project's impact on Amman's e conomic development and its resilience to climate change. He envisioned a future with more green spaces, which he believes will enhance food security and promote environmental sustainability. UNDP Resident Representative, Randa Abu Hassan, expressed gratitude to the Japanese government for supporting the project, which aims to enhance food security in Amman. She emphasized the role of the training center in promoting modern urban agriculture methods and tools. Abu Hassan also encouraged the implementation of similar projects in other Jordanian cities to enhance climate action and resilience across the Kingdom.
