Beirut: Former Prime Minister Saad Hariri hosted the Grand Mufti of the Republic, Sheikh Abdul-Latif Derian, along with a delegation of muftis, at Center House this afternoon. The meeting was attended by Hariri Foundation President, Mrs. Bahia Hariri, and Hariri's advisor on Islamic affairs, Ali Janani. Talks between Hariri and Mufti Derian centered on recent developments and the general situation in the country.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Hariri later welcomed former MP Walid Jumblatt and Mrs. Noura Jumblatt for further discussions. These discussions also focused on the prevailing situation and recent developments impacting the country. Following the meeting, Jumblatt expressed his sentiments, noting the significance of Hariri's residence as a reference point for patriots and moderates. He emphasized resilience amidst challenges and affirmed the inevitability of parliamentary elections, stating readiness for upcoming events.
When questioned about Hariri's potential participation in the elections, Jumblatt clarified that his visit was primarily for personal camaraderie with Hariri, not election discussions. He highlighted his longstanding relationship with the Hariri family, emphasizing their shared historical struggles since March 14th, and chose not to delve into electoral specifics.
On the subject of the Taif Agreement's implementation, Jumblatt acknowledged the Lebanese Army's efforts and the international commendation it has received. He underscored the recognition from entities like the Central Command (CENTCOM) and the American acknowledgment of the army's role, while noting internal skepticism. Jumblatt closed by praising PM Saad Hariri's recent address, particularly Hariri's tribute to the people of the South.
