Brussels: The inaugural GCC-EU summit, set to convene this Wednesday, symbolizes a significant milestone in the longstanding relationship between the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the European Union (EU), promising to deepen ties across a broad spectrum of mutual interests. According to Kuwait News Agency, the summit will be co-chaired by the Amir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, representing the current GCC presidency, and Charles Michel, President of the European Council. The event aims to broaden the scope of collaboration between the two blocs. His Highness the Prime Minister of Kuwait, Sheikh Ahmad Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, will also participate, highlighting the importance of the summit to the GCC member states. The discussions at the summit will focus on key areas such as economy, trade, investment, energy, climate cooperation, and more. This meeting marks a continuation of the partnership initiated in 1989 when the GCC and the EU first established formal relations through a cooperation agr eement. This agreement facilitated the creation of a joint Foreign Ministers Council, which has since convened annually. In February 2022, the Foreign Ministers of the GCC and the EU updated their joint cooperation program for 2022-27, which was further revised in October 2023. The program outlines joint activities in trade, investment, climate action, green and sustainable energy transitions, and counterterrorism efforts. Further cementing their commitment, the EU declared a Strategic Partnership with the GCC in May 2022, underlining a roadmap to enhance cooperation. That same month, Luigi Di Maio was appointed as the Union's Special Representative for the Gulf region, underscoring the EU's commitment to strengthening these ties. The EU remains the second largest commercial partner to the GCC, with trade volumes reaching approximately EUR 170 billion (USD 185 billion) in 2023. Since the onset of the Russian-Ukraine conflict in 2020, the EU has tripled its fuel imports from the GCC, which now account for 7 5 percent of its fuel needs. Kuwaiti Ambassador in Belgium, Nawaf Al-Enezi, emphasized the strategic importance of the summit, noting that the EU and GCC together account for more than 20 percent of the gross world product. He described the summit as a step forward in enhancing strategic cooperation and establishing communication channels to ensure regional and global security and stability. The ambassador also indicated that the summit is expected to produce a final communique addressing trade, investment, energy transition, climate change, counterterrorism, humanitarian aid, and regional security cooperation.
