VADODARA: India and Spain have solidified their bilateral cooperation, particularly in the defense sector, following discussions between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez. The talks, held in Vadodara, Gujarat, highlighted the strengthening of ties and the signing of various agreements across multiple sectors. According to Kuwait News Agency, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the long-standing partnership between India and Spain, founded on shared values such as democracy and the rule of law. He announced the establishment of a new Indian consulate in Barcelona and welcomed Spain's decision to open a consulate in Bengaluru, marking a step forward in diplomatic relations. Prime Minister Sanchez expressed optimism about the deepening bilateral relations, underscoring an ambitious joint declaration that outlines cooperation in investment, railways, customs, and cultural exchanges. The two nations are also set to celebrate the Spain-India Year for Culture, Tourism, and Art ificial Intelligence in 2026, a move expected to further enhance cooperation. Sanchez highlighted the complementary nature of both countries, with India playing a significant role in the Indo-Pacific and Spain maintaining strong relations with Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, and the European Union. He stressed the importance of leveraging these connections to tackle global challenges, including strengthening the multilateral order, preserving peace and democracy, and addressing climate issues. Earlier in the day, Modi and Sanchez inaugurated the TATA Aircraft Complex in Vadodara, a joint venture between India's Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) and Spain's Airbus Defence and Space SA. This venture is part of a $2.5 billion defense deal to produce 56 C-295 aircraft for the Indian Air Force, with 40 to be manufactured in India. The first aircraft is expected to be completed by 2026, with six already delivered from Spain. Modi highlighted the significance of this partnership, stating that it reinfo rces India's position in global aerospace manufacturing. Sanchez remarked on the importance of the Airbus-Tata collaboration, emphasizing its role in showcasing the capabilities of the Spanish defense industry and enhancing industrial ties between the two nations.
