Beirut: The Kataeb's Political Bureau convened its weekly meeting under the leadership of Party Leader Samy Gemayel, with participation from the Central Council, to honor the victims of the Beirut port explosion, including several Kataeb martyrs.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, the Political Bureau issued a statement commending the government's recent session on illegal weapons. The government mandated the Lebanese Army to draft a concrete plan with deadlines for addressing illegal arms. This move was described by the Kataeb as a 'historic decision' that aligns Lebanon with the path of reclaiming its sovereignty and restoring the state's authority. The Bureau expressed confidence in the government's commitment to continue discussions related to arms control until a definitive resolution is achieved.
The Bureau cautioned against any attempts to undermine the decision or revert to intimidation tactics, asserting such methods are outdated and unacceptable. It also rejected comments made by Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem, viewing them as denial and an attempt to incite unwanted conflict. Additionally, the Bureau praised security forces for managing unlawful street actions meant to pressure authorities and defy sovereign decisions.
Reflecting on the fifth anniversary of the 2020 Beirut port explosion, the Kataeb Political Bureau emphasized that the tragedy could have been avoided if Lebanon had a functioning state exercising authority throughout its territory. The Bureau reiterated its call for a judicial resolution in the port explosion case by issuing an indictment to pinpoint those responsible and establish accountability.
The Bureau acknowledged Justice Minister Adel Nassar's efforts to advance the investigation and maintain its integrity, expressing hope for the justice anticipated by the Lebanese. It also commended Culture Minister Ghassan Salameh's initiative to designate the Beirut Port's grain silos as a national heritage site, transforming them into a memorial to keep the tragedy alive in public consciousness.
Finally, the Political Bureau urged for the swift restoration and revitalization of the Port of Beirut, underscoring its importance as a key economic driver for Lebanon's recovery.
