Beirut: The Kataeb Party’s Political Bureau, led by party chief Samy Gemayel, held its weekly meeting to discuss recent political and security developments in Lebanon. The Bureau issued a statement emphasizing the need for disarmament before the upcoming parliamentary elections.
According to National News Agency – Lebanon, the Bureau condemned statements by Hezbollah officials, including Secretary-General Sheikh Naim Qassem, who opposed the consolidation of weapons north of the Litani River and threatened civil unrest. These remarks are seen as a violation of the ceasefire agreement and Lebanese law, undermining international resolutions and the National Pact. The Bureau insists that all weapons should be placed under State authority and urges the government to expedite the nationwide disarmament process.
The Bureau also highlighted the importance of free and fair elections, asserting that disarmament in Hezbollah-controlled areas is essential before the constitutional electoral deadline. It called for amendments to the electoral law to allow Lebanese expatriates to vote for all 128 parliamentary seats, opposing any technical delays that could affect electoral equality.
Furthermore, the Bureau urged the government to conduct a thorough review of public administration to identify needs, reduce waste, and eliminate unnecessary positions. This step is deemed crucial for addressing issues related to salaries and wages in the public sector.
