Beirut: The Kataeb Party's political bureau recently convened for its weekly meeting under the leadership of party head Samy Gemayel. Following an assessment of the week's developments, the bureau released a statement addressing critical national issues.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, the political bureau articulated grave concerns over persistent breaches of the ceasefire agreement and reiterated its confidence in the Lebanese Army's capacity to maintain a robust presence nationwide, particularly in border regions. The party trusts the army to investigate recent rocket launches from Lebanon and identify those responsible. The Kataeb Party emphasized the importance of not giving Israel further reasons to justify its attacks on Lebanon. It called for a strategic plan to collect illegal weapons, urging the Cabinet to prioritize this issue. The party proposed establishing a transparent and actionable timeline for disarmament to help Lebanon escape the cycle of ongoing conflicts, fostering long-term stability and security.
The political bureau insisted that approaching electoral deadlines should not be used as an excuse to postpone addressing the disarmament issue. Resolving this matter decisively remains a critical priority, as true stability cannot be achieved without a comprehensive solution.
The Kataeb Party reaffirmed its dedication to holding parliamentary elections as scheduled. The party is open to constructive dialogue about improving electoral law but insists such discussions should not delay the electoral process due to political disagreements over a unified framework. The party strongly opposes any electoral law that undermines fair representation, warning that straying from democratic principles, freedom of expression, and the right to vote under proper state supervision would severely hinder Lebanon's democratic progress.
The Kataeb welcomed the announcement of municipal and mayoral election dates and urged its supporters and allies to actively participate by running for office or voting. The party emphasized the importance of these elections in improving local governance, noting the resilience local authorities have shown in addressing citizens' needs during challenging times while the central government struggled to meet its responsibilities.
