Geneva: The 34th International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent commenced in Geneva, marking a significant gathering with the participation of Kuwait. The event, themed "Navigate Uncertainty - Strengthen Humanity," aims to bolster international cooperation to tackle urgent global humanitarian issues. According to Kuwait News Agency, Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis opened the conference by expressing concern over the current global situation, noting the existence of over 120 active armed conflicts. Cassis highlighted the severe implications for millions of civilians relying on the international community for relief from their suffering. He described a complex humanitarian landscape where armed conflicts intersect with climate change, migration, epidemics, and the spread of disinformation, exacerbating global tensions and violence risks. IFRC President Kate Forbes emphasized the crucial need for adherence to International Humanitarian Law and ensuring unrestricted humanitarian access amid es calating crises. Forbes outlined the conference's priorities, which include reinforcing compliance with International Humanitarian Law, protecting civilians and humanitarian workers, and enhancing responses to climate-related disasters. Forbes also reported that 117 million people worldwide are affected by conflict, lauding the dedication and sacrifice of 16 million Red Cross and Red Crescent volunteers who provide assistance in challenging and often risky environments. The conference, taking place from October 28 to 31, gathers one of the world's largest humanitarian networks, comprising 191 National Societies and 196 states party to the Geneva Conventions.
