Kuwait Implements AI Cameras to Combat Reckless Driving and Enhance Road Safety

Kuwait city: In an aggressive move to curb the rampant reckless driving behaviors on its roads, the Ministry of Interior (MoI) of Kuwait has deployed artificial intelligence (AI) cameras specifically designed to detect violations like speeding and phone use while driving. This initiative forms part of a broader effort to ensure public safety and minimize traffic-related incidents that have been frequent and severe. According to Kuwait News Agency, the MoI's statistics indicate a troubling trend in traffic violations, with over 1.5 million speeding cases and nearly 9,500 instances of distracted driving reported across Kuwait's six governorates in the first half of 2024 alone. Colonel Fahad Al-Issa, Director of the Traffic Awareness Department at the MoI, underscored the critical role of these AI cameras in the enforcement of traffic laws. The cameras are strategically installed to monitor seatbelt usage and phone use while driving, with 252 units already operational. Colonel Al-Issa emphasized the importance of adherence to traffic rules, including seatbelt safety, maintaining safe driving distances, and the prohibition of phone use while driving. Further enhancing the traffic management system, Lieutenant Colonel Abdullah Bo Hassan, Assistant Director of the Traffic Awareness Department, pointed out that the department is amplifying its traffic safety campaigns through various media platforms to build a robust traffic safety culture among drivers. These campaigns are pivotal in reinforcing the message of safe driving practices.
