Kuwaiti Official Calls for Enhanced Protection of Refugees at UN Meeting

Geneva: At the 75th refugee agency meeting, Kuwaiti representative Counsellor Abdullah Al-Khubaizi expressed deep concerns about the escalating humanitarian crises in the region and their severe impact on refugees' rights. He condemned the use of starvation and aid blockades as warfare tactics and emphasized the need for urgent international action to uphold the rights of war victims. According to Kuwait News Agency, during his address, Al-Khubaizi highlighted the challenges undermining regional and international stability, pointing to the recurring crises that have resulted in an unprecedented number of refugees. He criticized the global community for often neglecting international laws in handling refugee situations. Al-Khubaizi also stressed the importance of reforming the Security Council to make crisis responses more efficient and comprehensive, citing a decline in confidence in the United Nations' effectiveness as detrimental to its integrity. The Counsellor reiterated Kuwait's commitment to supportin g refugee host countries and sharing the burdens associated with such humanitarian efforts. Over the past decade, Kuwait has contributed a significant amount of aid, totaling USD 500 million to the UNHCR, demonstrating its dedication to humanitarian causes. Furthermore, Al-Khubaizi reaffirmed Kuwait's support for the UNHCR's goals to foster a better future for refugees globally. The annual meetings of the commission's executive committee in Geneva serve as a platform for reviewing projects, approving budgets, and discussing international protection and various pertinent issues.
