New York: The Lebanese American University (LAU) celebrated a century of service to the community by hosting a Centennial Gala Dinner at the New York Public Library on March 13, 2025. The event aimed to support LAU's mission of fostering education and healthcare in Lebanon through various fundraising initiatives.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, the proceeds from the gala will be directed towards LAU's efforts to boost industry in Lebanon, provide scholarships for financially challenged students, and support healthcare initiatives. These efforts come at a crucial time as Lebanon navigates a period of rebuilding after years of crises.
The distinguished gathering included New York State Assemblymember Alex Bores, Lebanon's Ambassador to the United Nations Hadi Hachem, and Permanent Representative of the State of Kuwait to the United Nations Ambassador Tareq Al-Bannai, among others. LAU President Emeritus Joseph G. Jabbra, alumni, donors, and friends of the university were also present, demonstrating their commitment to LAU's mission.
Philip Stoltzfus, Chairman of the LAU Board of Trustees, addressed the attendees, emphasizing the university's century-long dedication to doing the right thing in both prosperous and challenging times. He highlighted the university's steadfast commitment to Lebanon and its foundational values.
A significant announcement was made by LAU President Chaouki T. Abdallah, revealing that trustee Raymond Debbane and his family have pledged the largest donation in LAU's history. This contribution will support the university's global strategy and its New York campus, marking a milestone in the university's expansion plans.
The gala also honored alumnus and CEO of Synopsys, Sassine Ghazi ('91), for his achievements in innovation, and Arab pop icon Elissa for her advocacy of women's rights and her battle against breast cancer. Both spoke passionately about their experiences and the importance of education and hope for Lebanon's future.
The evening was co-chaired by LAU trustees H.H. Sheikha Intisar Al Sabah and Mr. Peter Tanous, further underscoring the collective effort to support LAU's mission and vision for the future.
