Lebanese Information Minister Urges Support for President’s Peace Initiative Amid Escalating Crisis

Beirut: In a special interview with ABC News, Information Minister, Attorney Dr. Paul Morcos, highlighted the grave situation unfolding in southern Lebanon, describing it as a "serious escalation with very worrying humanitarian dimensions." He emphasized that the Israeli attacks are not merely aimed at pressuring residents to flee but are part of a systematic effort to destroy homes, suggesting a policy of mass displacement.

According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Morcos aligned his statements with those of the Prime Minister following a recent cabinet meeting. He asserted that the Israeli Defense Minister's declarations are being translated into actions that resemble an invasion and occupation. He characterized these actions as a form of 'cleansing' of southern Lebanon.

Morcos further elaborated that Israeli operations are becoming increasingly evident in their intent, as they pursue security objectives at the cost of Lebanese civilian lives, including journalists. On the political front, he mentioned that Lebanese President General Joseph Aoun has proposed an initiative that is "advanced, bold and clear." This initiative seeks to initiate negotiations under the international community's supervision but has been met with further Israeli aggression.

The Information Minister warned that the situation is rapidly deteriorating, particularly on the humanitarian front, where conditions have worsened significantly. He underscored reports from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and alarming statistics from UNICEF and other international organizations.

In terms of diplomatic efforts, Morcos detailed that the Lebanese President is actively consulting with friendly nations to halt the conflict. He concluded by stating that current Lebanese efforts are concentrated on diplomatic channels to de-escalate tensions, mitigate the humanitarian crisis, and bolster aid in terms of shelter, food, and medical supplies.
