Lebanese Newspapers Highlight Escalating Diplomatic Tensions and Domestic Commitments

Beirut: Lebanese newspapers on January 21, 2025, focused on escalating diplomatic tensions involving Lebanon, Israel, and the United States, as well as domestic commitments to handling weapons within Lebanon. The headlines from major newspapers highlighted the complex interplay between regional diplomacy and national security.

According to National News Agency – Lebanon, An-Nahar reported on the growing official momentum to revive a previously established mechanism, with Lebanese leader Aoun reiterating his dedication to managing all weapons within Lebanon’s borders. This indicates a persistent focus on internal security and the management of armed groups within the country.

Al-Akhbar’s coverage highlighted statements from Karam, who criticized Israel’s rejection of the armistice agreement and labeled its demands as excessively harsh. This is juxtaposed with Washington’s proposal to establish a tripartite ministerial committee as an alternative to the current mechanism, suggesting a shift in diplomatic stra
tegy and an attempt to mediate the ongoing tensions.

Al-Joumhouria emphasized Aoun’s warnings against involving Lebanon in conflicts of other nations, while also noting the hardening of the Israeli stance in diplomatic talks. This has been compounded by the United States’ refusal to provide security guarantees, which could further complicate peace efforts in the region.

Nidaa Al-Watan focused on “The Second Oath,” which encapsulates the themes of sovereignty, peace, and reform. This reflects an internal dialogue on Lebanon’s future direction, emphasizing the need for comprehensive reforms to ensure national stability and peace.
