RIYADH: Lebanon's Caretaker Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants, Abdallah Bou Habib, emphasized the country's determination to bolster the deployment of its armed forces in southern Lebanon during a preparatory ministerial meeting for the joint Arab-Islamic summit in Riyadh. Bou Habib called for the support of the Arab and Islamic worlds to halt what he described as a war aimed at eliminating Lebanon, a nation known for its diversity and coexistence among different religions and civilizations. According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Bou Habib highlighted the importance of a ceasefire and a recommitment to implementing Resolution 1701 as preferable alternatives to ongoing conflict. He stressed Lebanon's clear position on achieving a sustainable solution, starting with an immediate ceasefire, restoring calm and stability to the border, and ensuring the return of displaced individuals to their communities. The minister underlined that the Government of Lebanon should be the only legitimate authority south of the Litani River, in line with the provisions of Resolution 1701. Bou Habib appealed for Arab support to enhance Lebanon's defensive capabilities and maintain its sovereignty and independence against external threats. He expressed Lebanon's commitment to cooperating with international peacekeeping forces operating in the south, known as UNIFIL, and condemned any attacks on their personnel or headquarters. He reiterated Lebanon's adherence to the principles of the National Accord Document, which advocates extending state authority over all Lebanese territory. The Foreign Minister thanked Saudi Arabia for its support in organizing the meeting, acknowledging the Kingdom's historical role in addressing Arab issues. He also expressed gratitude to Ahmed Aboul Gheit and Hussein Ibrahim Taha for their efforts in preparing for the summit. Bou Habib concluded by expressing hope for outcomes that align with the aspirations of Lebanon and its people, comparing Lebanon's resilience to that of a Phoenix rising from the ashes, with the support of its Arab and Islamic allies.
