Beirut: Prime Minister Najib Mikati has criticized the recent statement by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu suggesting that Saudi Arabia has sufficient land to establish a Palestinian state. Mikati expressed concern that such comments undermine the Palestinian cause and disregard the sacrifices made by the Palestinian people, including martyrs, wounded individuals, and those displaced in the diaspora.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Mikati emphasized that Netanyahu's remarks neglect the longstanding position of Saudi Arabia on the Palestinian right to a dignified life on their own land. He highlighted that the statement disregards key Arab peace initiatives, notably the Beirut Peace Initiative of 2002, which urged a full Israeli withdrawal from territories occupied since June 1967.
Mikati further asserted the undeniable right of Palestinians to establish an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital, in line with international resolutions. He noted Lebanon's vested interest in the matter, given the country's role in hosting Palestinian refugees since their displacement began, and the shared sacrifices made in defense of the Palestinian cause.
He stressed the importance of resolving the conflict to prevent ongoing regional crises. Mikati called on the United Nations to play a more equitable role in enforcing international resolutions to achieve lasting peace in the region.
