Mikati Discusses Lebanon’s Crises with Key Stakeholders at Grand Serail

BEIRUT: Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati engaged in significant discussions on Tuesday at the Grand Serail, addressing Lebanon's socio-economic challenges and the ongoing conflict impacts with various local and international figures. According to National News Agency-Lebanon, Mikati's engagements included a meeting with a delegation from the Economic, Social, and Environmental Council, headed by Chairman Charles Arbid. The delegation presented a stark portrayal of the economic and social realities shaped by the ongoing aggression against Lebanon. Arbid emphasized the necessity of national unity and solidarity, the urgency of ceasing hostilities, and the importance of electing a new president to address these critical issues. Additionally, the meeting touched on the support from global economic councils, with a significant meeting scheduled in France on October 22 to discuss Lebanon's challenges and garner international support. In another crucial interaction, Mikati, alongside Environment Minister Nas ser Yassin, met with UNICEF Deputy Director Ted Chaiban and WFP Director Matthew Hollingworth. The discussions highlighted the dire humanitarian needs, particularly concerning food aid, sanitation, and educational support for over 400,000 displaced children as the winter season approaches. Chaiban stressed the need for an immediate cessation of hostilities to safeguard civilians and essential infrastructure. Mikati also held a meeting with the Coalition of Voluntary Societies in Lebanon, represented by Coordinator Dr. Kamal Mhanna, who advocated for increased humanitarian aid from Arab nations and the global community to address the immediate needs. Parallel discussions included a session with MP Farid Khazen, focusing on the intertwined necessities of a ceasefire and the election of a new president to navigate Lebanon out of its current plight. Khazen highlighted the forthcoming spiritual summit in Bkerki as a potential catalyst for reinforcing national unity. Furthermore, discussions with MP Qassem Hashe m revolved around diplomatic efforts to secure a ceasefire and the role of international pressure on Israel. Hashem also brought attention to the specific needs of displaced populations, particularly from the Arqoub region, underscoring the government's role in support during these turbulent times.
