Beirut: Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati chaired a cabinet session at the Grand Serail on Wednesday, addressing concerns over Israeli violations of the ceasefire. The meeting underscored the urgency of maintaining stability in the region. According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Caretaker Minister of Information, Ziad Makary, relayed the cabinet's decisions and detailed Mikati's remarks, noting ongoing Israeli violations that have surpassed 60 incidents since the ceasefire began a week ago. Mikati emphasized his communications with the U.S. and France, indicating their dedication to resolving these breaches. He noted progress in reinforcing the ceasefire and expressed hopes for lasting stability, while remaining cautious about potential violations that could escalate tensions. Mikati pledged government support for displaced citizens returning home, aiming to bolster their resilience socially and economically. He also acknowledged international allies for their relief efforts and called for continue d solidarity. Addressing the Lebanese diaspora, he urged them to contribute to rebuilding the nation with trust and determination. The Prime Minister expressed optimism about Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri's call for a presidential election on January 9, hoping for a unifying president to lead the country forward. Makary fielded questions about the government's plan to bolster the army's presence in southern Lebanon, confirming that it would be addressed in Saturday's session. The Army Commander is expected to present the plan, which will be shared with ministers and is not confidential. Makary emphasized that the deployment decision is supported by all ministers, including those from Hezbollah. On implementing UN Security Council Resolution 1701, Makary stated that the army, with government support, is tasked with this responsibility.
