Minister Salameh Seeks UNESCO’s Help to Safeguard Lebanon’s Cultural Heritage Amid Conflict

Beirut: Minister of Culture, Dr. Ghassan Salameh, held a phone call with the Director-General of UNESCO, Dr. Khaled El-Enany, urging intervention to protect Lebanese cultural heritage amid the ongoing armed conflict. Dr. Salameh, on behalf of the Ministry of Culture and the Lebanese government, requested UNESCO to remind neighboring or belligerent states of their obligation to safeguard Lebanese cultural sites. The focus is on preventing damage to these sites, particularly the National Museum in Beirut and historically significant areas inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List. According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Salameh emphasized the importance of protecting these cultural properties and their surroundings from any potential harm. This request aligns with various UNESCO conventions, notably the Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict and its accompanying protocols. Dr. Salameh also highlighted the importance of adhering to the Hague Convention's decision from November 19, 2024, which underscores the need for enhanced protection of cultural property during conflicts. In addition to the phone call, Minister Salameh has formally communicated this request through a letter to Dr. El-Enany, underscoring the urgency and significance of safeguarding Lebanon's cultural heritage in these challenging times.
