Ministerial Committee Reviews Lebanon’s Electoral Law at Grand Serail

Beirut: The ministerial committee responsible for examining Lebanon's electoral law convened at the Grand Serail, under the leadership of Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Tarek Mitri. The meeting was attended by a number of key ministers, including Foreign Minister Youssef Raji, Justice Minister Adel Nassar, Minister of the Displaced and State Minister for Technology and Artificial Intelligence Kamel Shehadeh, Labor Minister Mohammad Haidar, Interior and Municipalities Minister Brig. Gen. Ahmad Hajjjar, and Information Minister Dr. Paul Morcos.

According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Dr. Mitri addressed the media following the meeting, reminding them that the Cabinet had formed the committee weeks earlier to scrutinize the electoral law. The committee identified practical challenges in the current law's implementation, prompting discussions about drafting a new electoral law for Parliament's consideration. After thorough discussions, the Cabinet tasked the committee with compiling proposals and amendments to formulate a draft law. The committee has finalized its work and is set to present its proposals to the Cabinet on Thursday for a concluding decision.

When questioned about the number of proposals, Mitri acknowledged the presence of several. Addressing concerns about a lack of consensus, he stated that the committee's role was to prepare the proposals, which they have accomplished. In response to inquiries about potential tensions within the Cabinet due to differing opinions, Mitri emphasized that the government will handle discussions without tension.
