Beirut: Lebanon's newly appointed Minister of Justice, Adel Nassar, has reaffirmed his commitment to facilitating the investigation into the Beirut Port explosion, promising to provide all necessary support to ensure the lead investigator, Judge Tarek Bitar, is equipped to issue an indictment in the case.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Nassar emphasized the importance of the Supreme Judicial Council in deciding on the Beirut Port explosion case. He stated that the Council would be a focus of his efforts to ensure justice is served in this critical investigation.
The Beirut Port explosion, which took place on August 4, 2020, was one of the most catastrophic events in Lebanon's history. The blast resulted in massive destruction in the capital, causing the loss of hundreds of lives and injuring thousands. Families of the victims have persistently sought justice, facing numerous obstacles including delays in investigations and threats against Judge Tarek Bitar, the lead investigator.
Lebanon's judicial challenges have been compounded by political interference. The country has a history of political factions trying to control the judiciary by appointing loyal judges and blocking appointments that could threaten their interests. This has led to a paralysis in the judiciary, especially in sensitive cases like the Beirut Port explosion investigation and corruption cases involving high-ranking officials.
Nassar also expressed his commitment to advancing judicial independence by pushing for a law that would protect the judiciary from political interference. He aims to pass and enact this law swiftly to restore public confidence in Lebanon's legal system.
