Nations face existential challenges — UN chief

United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres said on Thursday that the world is grappling with extensional challenges namely the climate crIsis, soaring costs of living, mounting poverty and inequality.

The UN chief, addressing the 15th Brics summit, held in Johannesburg, South Africa, said divisions, geopolitical strifes have been multiplying with dire repercussions, particularly ramifications of "Russia's war on Ukraine." Such challenges stand in the path toward sustainable development, he said in his statement at the convention, excerpts of which were monitored in the Egyptian capital.

Nations are on the course of a multi-polar world "and this is positive" however such an order is not sufficient to establish justice and peace in the globe, he cautioned.

He called for unifying nations' policies toward emerging innovations, namely artificial intelligence, suggesting that some of the remedies lie in full respect for the UN charter, the international laws, great values, human rights and greater solidarity.

Africa has remained a victim of slavery and colonialism, he said, noting that African states pay four times in exchange for loans, compared to the US payments. Moreover, African countries' green gas emissions account to four percent of the whole global emissions, yet the continent pays a high price for climatic change repercussions.

Advanced nations ought to honor their obligations and earmark USD 100 billion for aiding the developing countries. Guterres added.
