NATO and EU Demand Thorough Investigation into Georgian Election Violations

BRUSSELS: NATO and the European Union have called for a comprehensive investigation into reported violations during the recent elections in Georgia, expressing concerns about the integrity of the electoral process and the impact on public trust. According to Kuwait News Agency, NATO spokesperson Farah Dakhlallah highlighted the International Election Observation Mission's findings of an uneven playing field during the elections, which undermined public confidence in the results. In tandem, the EU issued a statement urging the Central Election Commission of Georgia and other relevant authorities to investigate and adjudicate the reported electoral irregularities with transparency and independence. The EU emphasized that addressing these issues is crucial for restoring trust in Georgia's electoral process. The EU closely monitored the lead-up to the parliamentary elections, acknowledging the Georgian people's commitment to democratic values and their country's EU aspirations. Preliminary findings from the Int ernational Election Observation Mission, led by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), indicated that while election day was generally well-organized, it was conducted in a tense environment. Observers noted compromises in vote secrecy, procedural inconsistencies, and reports of voter intimidation, all of which negatively affected public trust. The EU reported concerns about the uneven level playing field and a divisive election campaign in a polarized atmosphere. There were significant worries about the impact of recent legislative amendments on the electoral process. The EU urged Georgia to implement democratic reforms aligned with European integration principles and reminded that any legislation undermining Georgian citizens' fundamental rights must be repealed. The elections were won by the pro-Russia ruling party, with pro-western opposition parties refusing to recognize the results.
