Oman Council Engages in Global Parliamentary Discussions at IPU General Assembly in Geneva


Geneva: The Council of Oman is participating in the 149th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) General Assembly, which commenced on October 13 and will continue until October 17, 2024, in Geneva. The delegation from Oman, led by Khalid Hilal Al Maawali, Chairman of the Shura Council, is set to engage in several crucial discussions focusing on the role of parliaments in addressing wide-ranging regional and international challenges.

According to Oman News Agency, the Omani delegation’s agenda includes participation across multiple committees and forums. These include the Standing Committee for Sustainable Development, the Standing Committee for Democracy and Human Rights, the Association of Secretaries-General of National Parliaments, the Standing Committee for International Peace and Security, the Standing Committee on United Nations Affairs, the Forum of Women Parliamentarians, and the Forum of Young Parliamentarians of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

In addition to these engagements, Al Maawali is also leading t
he Omani delegation in a coordination meeting with the Arab Group on the sidelines of the IPU meetings. This meeting focused on the preparations for the upcoming 37th Emergency Conference of the IPU, scheduled for October 15. The emergency conference will deliberate on the ongoing issues related to Israeli forces’ actions in the State of Palestine and the Lebanese Republic, seeking resolutions to halt the aggression.

Furthermore, the Arab Group at the IPU has appointed Al Maawali to head the emergency panel tasked with addressing urgent matters presented by the Algerian People’s National Assembly and the Palestinian National Council.
