Beirut: The Finance and Budget Committee convened on Monday under the leadership of MP Ibrahim Kanaan. The meeting, attended by caretaker Finance Minister Yassine Jaber, focused on Lebanon's increased contribution to the International Monetary Fund and the proposed changes to fee hikes in the draft 2025 budget.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, MP Kanaan announced after the session that an agreement was reached to increase Lebanon's IMF quota subscription. This decision is based on a clear vision and will be constrained by the treasury's capacity, as determined by the Ministry of Finance. The committee plans to submit this decision to the General Assembly for further deliberation.
MP Kanaan emphasized that annual fee increases should be avoided, asserting that citizens should not bear the burden of governmental failures. The committee has resolved to oppose any such proposals from the government, indicating a commitment to protect public interest.
