Prime Minister Dr. Bishr Khasawneh said youth bears bet to make change, adding that the state under His Majesty King Abdullah II’s leadership, supported by His Royal Highness Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II , “guarantees and enables” their “active” involvement in Jordan’s partisan work and political life in comprehensive modernization framework.
Visiting Al al-Bayt University (AABU) on Tuesday, as part of his field tours to the Kingdom’s governorates, PM met with the top-scoring students of AABU’s faculties, and inaugurated the 30th mural on the occasion of 30th anniversary of the university’s establishment, in the presence of the Minister of Education and Minister of Higher Education, Dr. Azmy Mahafzeh.
Khasawneh said youth are the “engine” of the society’s comprehensive change and modernization, stressing importance of Jordanian universities’ youth turnout to participate in the comprehensive modernization project, led by His Majesty King Abdullah II and supported by HRH Crown Prince Hussein bin Abdullah II, with its three political, economic and administrative tracks.
PM said universities are obligated to align their systems with bylaw for practicing partisan activities in higher education institutions, which entered into force, to motivate youth to participate in party-related activities.
In a related context, the PM noted government will not allow harassment practices aimed to hinder youth involvement in Jordan’s partisan and political life.
The premier added that university presidents and deans of student affairs have responsibilities to create an “appropriate” environment to stimulate students to engage in partisan and political work.
Noting Jordan’s fresh partisan experience and its comprehensive modernization pathway, he referred to the recent constitutional amendments and endorsement of the election and party laws, which offer possibilities to enhance participation of youth and women in the Kingdom’s political life and party work.
He noted Jordan’s upcoming parliamentary elections, which are scheduled to be held under the due date set by the Constitution between July and November 2024, constitute “a first station in which all bet on youth’s active participation.”
He affirmed youth participation in the past elections, which stood at 33%, does not meet ambitions.
The PM said the upcoming parliamentary elections, which will be held on the basis of the new election law, will allocate 41 seats for a national party list and 75 seats in the next elections, leading to a majority of parliamentary seats allocated to party lists.
Khasawneh indicated that Jordan’s comprehensive modernization project is linked to all sectoral reforms, primarily reforming the Kingdom’s education sector.
