President Aoun Urges Continued UNIFIL Presence to Prevent Security Gap in South Lebanon

Baku:President Joseph Aoun has emphasized the need for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) to remain in the country, warning that its withdrawal would lead to a security vacuum and the loss of international oversight in South Lebanon.

According to National news agency - Lebanon, Aoun discussed the matter with Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations. During their meeting, Aoun highlighted the critical role UNIFIL plays in the region, particularly in light of ongoing Israeli attacks and the occupation of southern Lebanese territories within the force's operational area.

Aoun acknowledged the humanitarian, social, healthcare, and educational contributions of UNIFIL, noting that these efforts have bolstered relationships with local communities and gained the trust of residents in the south. He expressed hope that the UN Security Council would agree to extend UNIFIL's mandate for another year, which was initially set for withdrawal.

The president also noted that UNIFIL's continued presence is vital, especially if Israeli forces retreat to the internationally recognized border and the Lebanese Army assumes control of the area. UNIFIL's support would be crucial in providing the Lebanese military with necessary humanitarian and logistical aid.
