Baabda: President of the Republic, General Joseph Aoun, on Tuesday received the UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher, at Baabda Palace, in the presence of the UN Deputy Special Coordinator, Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Lebanon Imran Riza, and several concerned officials.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Mr. Fletcher expressed his solidarity with Lebanon and its people, affirming the UN's commitment to supporting humanitarian efforts amid the country's challenging circumstances. He highlighted the importance of standing by Lebanon and strengthening the international response to its growing needs.
President Aoun reviewed the current situation, focusing on the security and humanitarian challenges due to the recent escalation and their impact on internal stability and citizens' conditions. He noted the increasing number of displaced persons, exceeding one million, who are predominantly living in shelters, adding pressure on infrastructure and essential services.
President Aoun informed Mr. Fletcher about the casualties from Israeli shelling, affecting workers in healthcare, relief sectors, and journalists. He emphasized Lebanon's ongoing efforts to contain the repercussions and stressed the need for sustainable solutions through political and diplomatic channels to preserve Lebanon's sovereignty, security, and stability.
The discussions highlighted the Lebanese state's efforts, particularly the Lebanese Army's role in maintaining security and stability despite challenges. Both parties recognized the importance of continued international support for national institutions and enhancing their capacities.
The humanitarian situation was also addressed, with a call for intensified international support to meet urgent needs in relief and basic services. The necessity of close coordination between government agencies and international organizations was emphasized to ensure an effective response.
The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of the importance of ongoing communication and coordination between Lebanon and the United Nations, aiming for joint efforts to mitigate the crisis and support Lebanon's resilience during this period.
