Red Cross and Red Crescent Regional Conference Opens in Beirut

Beirut:The 12th Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies Middle East and North Africa Regional Conference commenced today at the M¶venpick Hotel in Beirut under the patronage of His Excellency the President of the Lebanese Republic, General Joseph Aoun. This two-day event is hosted by the Lebanese Red Cross in cooperation with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and brings together leaders from National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies across the region, along with partners from the IFRC, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the Arab Red Crescent and Red Cross Organization (ARCO), and the Standing Commission of the Red Cross and Red Crescent.

According to National news agency - Lebanon, President Aoun addressed the attendees, emphasizing the dedication of the Lebanese Red Cross, which he described as more than just a humanitarian organization but a symbol of devotion and service beyond regional boundaries. He welcomed participants to Lebanon, highlighting the spirit of human solidarity.

Dr. Antoine Zoghbi, President of the Lebanese Red Cross, spoke about the need for structured and proactive strategies to address the crises affecting societies and to ensure the respect and enforcement of International Humanitarian Law. Kate Forbes, President of the IFRC, stressed the importance of protecting humanitarian workers and maintaining respect for the Red Cross and Red Crescent emblems.

Kate Halff, ICRC Deputy Regional Director, acknowledged the significant challenges posed by conflicts in the region and emphasized the need for unity in delivering aid. Dr. Abdullah Almuhaidali of ARCO expressed hope that the conference would transition from commitments to practical solutions, aiming for improved volunteer safety and resource mobilization.

Dr. Mohammed Al-Hadid, President of the Jordan National Red Crescent Society, and Georges Kettaneh, Secretary General of the Lebanese Red Cross, also addressed the assembly, focusing on accountability, institutional strengthening, and the protection of volunteers amidst various regional challenges.

The conference will cover key topics over its duration, including the implementation of the Amman Declaration 2024, updates from National Societies, volunteer safety, domestic resource mobilization, and the adoption of the Beirut Declaration. This declaration is anticipated to guide future humanitarian efforts in the region. The conference will conclude with the announcement of the host for the next regional meeting.
