Beirut: Republic of Korea Ambassador Geon Gyusuk and Minister of Social Affairs Dr. Haneen Sayed visited a government-designated collective shelter in Beirut, hosting families displaced by recent conflicts. The visit highlighted UNHCR's efforts, supported by the Republic of Korea, to aid those affected by displacement.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, the visit took place at Madame Baayni School, currently sheltering 485 internally displaced people (IDPs). The delegation met with families forced to flee their homes under attack, witnessing firsthand the impact of international support. The Republic of Korea's contribution has been pivotal in enhancing living conditions in these shelters, providing essential assistance and a sense of stability for displaced families.
Minister Dr. Haneen Sayed emphasized the importance of international partnership in these efforts, stating the Government of Lebanon's commitment to coordinating emergency responses and ensuring the protection and dignity of displaced families. The support from the Republic of Korea and UNHCR's involvement in shelter management has been crucial in addressing the immediate needs of those affected.
UNHCR's Karolina Lindholm Billing expressed gratitude for the Republic of Korea's timely support, which has enabled rapid distribution of relief items and improvements to shelter facilities. These efforts provide displaced families with safety and privacy during a period of profound uncertainty.
During the visit, displaced families shared their experiences of fleeing conflict with minimal belongings, relying heavily on humanitarian assistance for basic needs.
