Beirut: Prime Minister Nawaf Salam on Wednesday inaugurated an extensive rehabilitation project for the primary access road to Beirut-Rafic Hariri International Airport. This project stretches from the airport terminal to the ESCWA building in the capital's core.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, the launch ceremony was held at the Middle East Airlines (MEA) Training and Conference Center, attended by key figures including Ministers Fayez Rasamny (Public Works and Transport), Ahmad Hajjjar (Interior), and Laura Khazen Lahoud (Tourism). Other notable attendees included MEA Chairman Mohammad El Hout, Director General of Civil Aviation Amin Jaber, and Beirut Governor Marwan Abboud, among others. Representatives from Khatib and Alami, Rebirth Beirut, and local municipal leaders were also present.
The event commenced with the Lebanese national anthem, followed by a welcome from MEA's Head of Public Relations, Rima Makawi. MEA Chairman Mohammad El Hout addressed the gathering, extending a warm welcome to Prime Minister Salam and highlighting the deep-rooted connections between the Salam family and MEA. El Hout noted Salam's passion for aviation and his historical ties with the airline.
El Hout emphasized MEA's resilience during challenging times, stating that the airline maintained operations when other carriers withdrew. He praised Minister Rasamny's swift actions since taking office and announced MEA's commitment to financing road lighting in collaboration with Rebirth Beirut. He also acknowledged efforts to regulate roadside advertisements and reaffirmed MEA's partnership with the Ministry of Tourism.
Ramadan Harb from Khatib and Alami presented a detailed plan for the road's rehabilitation. A video showcased the planned renovation of the airport's VIP lounge, with work starting soon.
Minister Fayez Rasamny expressed his enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing its significance in enhancing Lebanon's image. He outlined the comprehensive road improvements, including repaving, lighting installation, and landscaping. Rasamny highlighted the importance of public-private partnerships, citing MEA as a successful model.
Prime Minister Salam underscored the project's symbolic and practical importance, praising MEA's role in enhancing airport facilities. He emphasized the airport road's significance as the first impression for visitors and noted ongoing discussions to enhance road security. Salam concluded by commending MEA's contributions to Lebanon's connectivity.
The ceremony concluded with a tour of various MEA departments by Prime Minister Salam and accompanying ministers, where staff provided insights into the company's operations.
