Cairo: Prime Minister Nawaf Salam and his accompanying Lebanese delegation visited Sunday the headquarters of the League of Arab States in Cairo, where they met with the League’s Secretary-General, Ahmed Aboul Gheit. Discussions focused on regional issues, developments in Lebanon, Lebanese-Arab relations, and ways to strengthen joint Arab action.
According to National News Agency – Lebanon, following the meeting, Prime Minister Salam proceeded to the main hall of the League’s headquarters where he delivered an address before the permanent representatives of the member states. He commended the League’s heritage and status as “one of the oldest regional organizations in our contemporary world, and one of the most experienced in transforming historical and cultural ties into institutions and policies.”
Salam highlighted the League’s role as an institutional memory of Arab will and a framework for collective consciousness shaped by the history of the Arab people. He emphasized that the Arab League preceded other regional experiences, such as the European, African, and Asian integrations, showcasing an advanced vision of regional cooperation.
Speaking from Cairo, Salam reiterated Lebanon’s belief in Arabism as a future project rather than a mere reflection of the past. He addressed Lebanon’s current situation, stating that the nation faces its challenges with resolve and is committed to reform and sovereignty. This includes reforming institutions and maintaining full sovereignty over its territory.
Salam affirmed Lebanon’s commitment to the Taif Agreement and UN Security Council Resolution 1701, highlighting its dedication to sovereignty, revitalization of southern villages, and reconstruction. However, he pointed out ongoing issues such as Israeli violations, occupation of Lebanese land, and unresolved prisoner cases.
The Prime Minister called on Arab states to pressure the international community for Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanese territories and the release of prisoners. He also emphasized Lebanon’s policy of non-interference in other countries’ affairs and its rejection of external interference in its own.
Salam expressed appreciation for the solidarity of Arab states with Lebanon during difficult times. He pledged Lebanon’s openness and steadfastness in its Arab identity, urging the Arab world to build realistic partnerships based on shared strategic interests.
In conclusion, Salam underscored the importance of the Arab League as an institution that unites the Arab world, transforming shared identity into actionable policies and projects that impact people’s lives.
