Sisi’s decree pardoning some political prisoners demonstrate a climate favorable for democracy: Party leaders

Leaders of political parties have applauded President Abdel Fattah El Sisi’s recent decree on releasing a number of convicts, including activist Ahmed Doma, describing the move as demonstrating a climate that is favorable for democracy.

The decree also reasserts that the current political climate is inclusive and embraces all segments of the society, no matter their political differences or affiliations might be, they said.

In a statement, Homaat Al-Watan (Guardians of the Nation) Party, led by Gen. Galal el Haridi said adopting an inmate release policy in some cases and activating the role of the Presidential Pardon Committee reflects a political breakthrough and a genuine interaction with requests of political forces, especially those submitted during the sessions and meetings of the National Dialogue.

This is a positive step in light of Egypt’s National Human Rights Strategy, the party said.

Meanwhile, the Coordination Committee of Parties’ Youth Leaders and Politicians (CPYP) thanked President Sisi for heeding the call of the National Dialogue’s Board of Trustees by issuing the presidential decree, which pardons 30 prisoners accused of spreading fake news and being involved in terrorism cases, using his constitutional powers.

President Sisi issued on Saturday decree no. 348 of 2023 on releasing a number of convicts, including political activist Ahmed Doma.
