Exeter: A new study has identified significant shifts in temperature conditions within Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) in tropical forests, highlighting the impact of climate change on these critical habitats. Researchers from Exeter, Manchester Metropolitan, and Cambridge universities analyzed three decades of temperature data and found that two-thirds of these areas are now experiencing temperatures outside their historical norms. According to Oman News Agency, the comprehensive study examined temperature trends beneath forest canopies across the globe, discovering that 66% of the KBAs in tropical forests have entered new temperature regimes, with more than 40% of observed temperatures exceeding previously recorded ranges. This shift suggests a rapid change in the local climates of these regions, which are essential for the survival of diverse species. The research also pointed out that the remaining 34% of KBAs, which have not yet seen changes in temperature regimes, could play a crucial role as refuges fo r biodiversity. However, Dr. Brittany Trew from the University of Exeter expressed concern over the species in these unchanged climates, as they are increasingly vulnerable to shifting conditions around them. The findings underscore the necessity for adopting "climate-smart" conservation strategies. Notably, over half of the KBAs that have not yet been affected by new temperature conditions do not have any formal protection, placing them at risk of degradation and highlighting a significant gap in conservation efforts. Regions such as Africa and Latin America were identified as having the highest rates of new temperature regimes, which calls for targeted conservation interventions in these areas to mitigate the impacts of climate change on their biodiversity.
