New York, 16 May, 2021 (Lana) – In his report to the Security Council, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres denied any decrease in the number of mercenaries and foreign fighters or their activities, especially in the center of the country.
The report added, according to what was quoted by Agence France-Presse, “While the ceasefire agreement is still in effect, the United Nations Mission in Libya received reports of the establishment of fortifications and defensive sites along the Sirte-Al-Jufra axis in central Libya, as well as the continued presence of foreign elements and capabilities.
“Despite the commitments made by the parties, air cargo activities continued with flights to various military bases in Libya,” Guterres said.
The Secretary-General added in the report, according to the agency, “I reiterate my call to member states and Libyan actors to put an end to violations of the arms embargo and facilitate the withdrawal of foreign fighters and mercenaries from the country.”
Guterres called for progress on the political, security and economic levels to allow national elections to take place on December 24, 2021.
