Third Ministerial Meeting Focuses on Syrian Displacement Issue in Lebanon

Beirut: The ministerial committee tasked with addressing the issue of displaced Syrians in Lebanon held its third meeting on Thursday, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Tarek Mitri, with the participation of Ministers Michel Menassah, Hanin Al-Sayed, Ahmed Al-Hajjar, and Mohammed Haidar.

According to National News Agency - Lebanon, the meeting, which also included relevant officials from the General Directorate of Public Security, focused on the gathered information regarding the number of Syrians in Lebanon and their legal, social, and economic conditions. Discussions also covered previous experiences in returning displaced persons to Syria and the challenges encountered during these processes.

In light of Lebanon's firm position in rejecting the resettlement of displaced Syrians in any form, the Lebanese government reiterated its commitment to actively work towards ensuring the safe and dignified return of the displaced individuals to their homeland. The details of a strategic plan aimed at facilitating this return were reviewed.

The committee addressed representatives of relevant UN agencies, underscoring the need for coordinated efforts with the Lebanese government to implement the plan. They stressed the urgency of reaching an agreement with Syrian authorities to expedite the return process.

The meeting highlighted several executive steps designed to initiate the first phase of the plan, reflecting a concerted effort to address the ongoing issue of Syrian displacement in Lebanon.
