UN Humanitarian Coordinator Emphasizes Urgent Need for Support in Lebanon Amid Ceasefire.

Nabatieh: The United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator in Lebanon, Imran Riza, has highlighted the urgent need for continued support and safe conditions for humanitarian operations and returnees in the country amidst a fragile ceasefire. This statement follows his field visit to Nabatieh, a region heavily affected by recent violence and hostilities. According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Riza emphasized the importance of collaboration between the Government of Lebanon, local authorities, and humanitarian partners to address the needs of those affected. The ceasefire, while providing a temporary respite, is still precarious, with violations and ongoing border tensions posing significant challenges to stability and the safety of civilians. Riza pointed out that approximately 600,000 internally displaced persons are beginning to return home, with a significant number heading towards the South and Nabatieh Governorate. However, the return process is fraught with difficulties, as many homes and essential in frastructure have been destroyed or heavily damaged. Access to critical services such as healthcare, water, and education remains severely restricted. The humanitarian response is adapting to the evolving situation, with efforts underway to scale up services in areas experiencing high numbers of returnees while continuing to support those still displaced. Riza stressed the necessity of unhindered humanitarian access, sustained funding, and donor support to facilitate urgent investments in basic services and infrastructure. Riza also praised the leadership of the Lebanese government and local authorities in managing the emergency and recovery phases. He reaffirmed the UN's commitment to supporting Lebanon's recovery and helping its people rebuild their lives, contribute to their communities, and work towards lasting peace and development.
