UN Officials Urge Recommitment to Peace in Lebanon and Israel

Beirut: A joint statement was released by the United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, and UNIFIL Head of Mission and Force Commander Lt. Gen. Aroldo L¡zaro, emphasizing the significant changes in Lebanon following the Cessation of Hostilities Understanding implemented on November 27, 2024. The statement highlights the reduction in violence and the return of hundreds of thousands to their homes in southern Lebanon.

According to National News Agency - Lebanon, the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) have successfully moved into positions previously held by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), with support from UNIFIL, to restore services and improve humanitarian access for communities impacted by the conflict. The ongoing formation of a new government, after the election of a president and the appointment of a prime minister, is seen as crucial for rebuilding trust between citizens and the state, potentially leading to the full extension of state authority and the country's recovery.

However, the statement cautions that the timelines set by the November Understanding have not been fulfilled, and current conditions do not allow for the safe return of citizens to areas along the Blue Line. Displaced communities are urged to remain cautious, as violations of United Nations Security Council resolution 1701 (2006) are still occurring daily. The statement underscores that adherence to the November Understanding and resolution 1701 is essential for achieving lasting peace and stability in the region.

The United Nations remains committed to engaging all parties to fulfill these objectives and is prepared to support actions aligned with resolution 1701. The statement calls for renewed commitment from all sides, given the significant stakes for both Lebanon and Israel.
