Beirut: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres concluded his visit to Lebanon, emphasizing the potential for a more hopeful future for the country. During a press conference, Guterres expressed optimism about Lebanon's prospects for institutional stability and the protection of its citizens, following meetings with key Lebanese political figures, including President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister-designate Nawaf Salam.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, Guterres highlighted the challenges ahead, particularly in rebuilding areas affected by conflict. He noted the ongoing cooperation between the United Nations and Lebanese authorities to support recovery efforts. Guterres also addressed the fragile cessation of hostilities in southern Lebanon, calling for all parties to honor their commitments to peace.
Guterres reported on the phased withdrawal of the Israel Defense Forces from Lebanese territory and the increased deployment of the Lebanese Armed Forces south of the Litani River. He stressed the importance of adherence to UN resolution 1701, which mandates the region be free of armed personnel except for the Lebanese government and UNIFIL.
During his visit, Guterres commended the efforts of UNIFIL peacekeepers who have conducted numerous missions in cooperation with Lebanese forces. He emphasized the necessity of guaranteeing their safety and freedom of movement. Guterres also called on the international community to enhance support for the Lebanese Armed Forces to ensure Lebanon's sovereignty and territorial integrity are respected.
He expressed gratitude to the troop-contributing countries and UN staff in Lebanon for their dedication and resilience. Guterres reiterated the United Nations' commitment to supporting Lebanon in achieving a permanent ceasefire, underlining the need for continued international solidarity with the Lebanese people.
In response to questions from journalists, Guterres condemned attacks on UNIFIL positions and called for clear condemnation of all violations of the cessation of hostilities. He expressed confidence in the international community's commitment to maintaining peace in Lebanon and ensuring that the agreements in place are respected.
