Beirut: The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Lebanon has announced a new contribution of 1 million USD from the Republic of Korea. This funding aims to support communities in South Lebanon that have been impacted by the recent conflict. The hostilities, which have intensified since September 2024, have led to significant damage to civilian infrastructure, businesses, and homes, especially in the southern part of the country.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, the Republic of Korea has been funding UNDP initiatives in South Lebanon since 2022. These efforts focus on strengthening the capacity of local authorities, improving basic services, and enhancing access to livelihood opportunities in vulnerable host communities. This ongoing partnership has played a crucial role in improving living conditions in the region.
A conflict-sensitive consultative process involving eight municipalities within the Tyre caza in South Lebanon identified key intervention sectors. These municipalities include Abbasiyeh, Borghliyeh, Borj Rahal, Tayer Debba, Naqoura, Deir Anon Al Naher, Tebnin, and Rcheif. The interventions are designed to complement the peacekeeping efforts of the Republic of Korea's UNIFIL battalion deployed in the region.
The communities have identified the most urgent needs as solid waste management, water and wastewater management, flood risk management, and improvements to municipal and agricultural infrastructure to rebuild livelihood opportunities.
