BEIRUT: The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has condemned an incident where an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) tank fired at a UN peacekeeper watchtower near Kafer Kela, resulting in property damage and the destruction of two surveillance cameras.
According to National News Agency – Lebanon, UNIFIL reported that the attack occurred early this morning and involved an IDF Merkava tank. The incident resulted in significant damage to the peacekeeping watchtower, although no injuries to UN personnel were reported. UNIFIL has expressed concerns over what it describes as “direct and apparently deliberate” fire on their position.
In their statement, UNIFIL reminded the IDF and all involved actors of their obligations under international law to ensure the safety and security of UN personnel and their property. They emphasized the need for respect towards the inviolability of UN premises at all times.
