Naqoura:Peacekeepers from the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) marked the International Day of Peace with a ceremony at their headquarters in Naqoura. As communities in South Lebanon continue to face the repercussions of conflict, the event highlighted the ongoing need for stability in the region.
According to National news agency - Lebanon, UNIFIL's Head of Mission and Force Commander, Major General Diodato Abagnara, emphasized the continuous responsibility of maintaining peace. He highlighted the significance of patrolling and open communication channels to minimize misunderstandings and potential escalation. Collaboration with the Lebanese Armed Forces is also a key focus as they take on more responsibilities in the southern region.
Abagnara addressed the severe humanitarian impact of hostilities between Hezbollah and the Israel Defense Forces, noting the displacement of thousands and the extensive damage to homes and infrastructure. The conflict has resulted in civilian casualties, and the tension affects communities on both sides of the Blue Line.
Despite the challenges, Abagnara expressed hope for peace, asserting that political solutions and commitments are essential for lasting stability. While peacekeepers play a crucial role in reducing risks and supporting diplomatic efforts, the ultimate responsibility for achieving peace lies with the conflicting parties themselves.
He reiterated the importance of fully implementing UN Security Council Resolution 1701 as the foundation for sustained peace in South Lebanon. Continued cooperation between UN peacekeepers and the Lebanese Armed Forces is vital for maintaining stability and extending state authority.
The International Day of Peace, established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1981, promotes ceasefires and non-violence. This year's observance is particularly significant as it marks UNIFIL's final celebration of the day before their mandate concludes later this year, following a Security Council decision in 2025 to end the mission.
