Hallusiyat al Tahta: UNIFIL peacekeepers conducting a coordinated patrol with the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) were confronted by civilians near Hallusiyat al Tahta in southern Lebanon. The individuals attempted to impede the peacekeepers by employing aggressive tactics, including stone-throwing, although no injuries were reported.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, UNIFIL personnel responded with non-lethal measures to safeguard both the patrol members and surrounding individuals. The LAF was informed immediately and arrived at the scene to help bring the situation under control, allowing the patrol to continue its mission.
Freedom of movement is essential for UNIFIL to fulfill its mandate, which involves operating independently and impartially as per UN Security Council Resolution 1701. Restrictions on this freedom, whether during joint or solo operations with the LAF, violate this resolution.
UNIFIL emphasized that targeting its peacekeepers is unacceptable and urged Lebanese authorities to ensure that peacekeepers can perform their duties without interference or threats.
