Beirut: The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has issued a statement regarding the recent conviction and sentencing of individuals involved in the killing of Irish peacekeeper Private Se¡n Rooney. The incident, which took place in Al-Aqbieh in December 2022, resulted in six individuals being found guilty by Lebanon's Permanent Military Court, while one individual was acquitted.
According to National News Agency - Lebanon, UNIFIL has expressed its approval of the trial's conclusion and commended the Lebanese Government for its commitment to justice. The organization highlighted its continuous support to both Lebanese and Irish authorities throughout the judicial proceedings related to the case.
UNIFIL reiterated its condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Private Se¡n Rooney, as well as to the Government of Ireland, underscoring its solidarity in the wake of the tragic event.
