Washington and Berlin Stress Strength of Transatlantic Relations

BERLIN: U.S. President Joe Biden and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz underscored the strength of transatlantic ties on Friday, emphasizing the importance of fortifying these relations. This declaration followed two pivotal meetings in Berlin: one between President Biden and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, and the other between Biden and Chancellor Scholz. According to Kuwait News Agency, Biden highlighted the unique role that the relationship between Berlin and Washington plays in the broader context of Europe-U.S. relations. He stated, "I cannot see how we can work to stabilize Europe and the world without maintaining close relations between the United States and Germany." Scholz echoed this sentiment, stressing the importance of the Europe-U.S. partnership during Biden's administration. He affirmed that this alliance is vital for the security and democracy of Europe, particularly in the context of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. Chancellor Scholz reiterated Germany's support for Ukraine and c riticized Russian President Vladimir Putin for his strategic miscalculations. President Biden acknowledged the significant expenses incurred by the U.S. due to its policy on the conflict but warned that the costs would escalate if Russia were to succeed. He urged the German government to commit two percent of its national income to NATO expenses. These discussions form part of Biden's broader diplomatic mission in Berlin, where he is expected to participate in a four-way summit alongside Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
