WHO Loses Contact with Hospital Staff in Gaza Amid Conflict

GAZA STRIP: The World Health Organization (WHO) has lost contact with staff at the Martyr Kamal Adwan Hospital in the northern Gaza Strip after the facility was reportedly stormed by the Israeli occupation army. This development raises concerns due to the hospital's overcrowding, with approximately 200 patients and hundreds of displaced individuals seeking refuge there. According to Maan News Agency, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus made the announcement on Friday via a statement on the X platform. He noted the alarming situation at Kamal Adwan Hospital and highlighted efforts made by WHO and its partners, who managed to reach the hospital late last night to transfer 23 patients and 26 caregivers to Al-Shifa Hospital. Additionally, they delivered critical supplies, including 180 units of blood, surgical equipment, and medicines, intended to serve over 5,000 patients. Ghebreyesus expressed deep concern over the loss of communication with the hospital staff following reports that the Israeli ar my had entered the facility. This situation is particularly troubling given the large number of patients and displaced people who rely on the hospital for shelter and medical care. Earlier in the day, medical and local sources reported that the Israeli army had detained hundreds of patients, medical personnel, and displaced individuals inside the hospital. This incident is part of an ongoing ground invasion and bombardment campaign by Israeli forces in the northern Gaza Strip, which began on October 5. The military actions aim to clear the area through forced evacuations and displacements. Since October 7, 2023, the conflict has escalated into a severe humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, resulting in over 143,000 casualties, including a significant number of children and women, and leaving more than 10,000 individuals unaccounted for. The region faces massive destruction, famine, and one of the most dire humanitarian situations globally. Despite a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities and orders from the International Court of Justice to prevent acts of genocide and improve the humanitarian conditions in Gaza, the conflict continues unabated.
